Toyota closes in on sales trifecta
Toyota is just eight weeks away from claiming an impressive sales trifecta with the best-selling automotive brand, best-selling vehicle and best-selling passenger car for 2017.
The company's dealers have sold more than 180,000 new vehicles this year, a gain of 5.3 per cent and a margin of more than 80,000 sales over its nearest competitor.
As a result, the New Year's Eve fireworks are expected to herald Toyota's sales leadership in Australia for the 21st time, including the past 15 years in a row.
HiLux leads the race to be declared Australia's best-selling vehicle for the second successive year, holding a margin of more than 3,300 sales over its closest rival.
Demand for the popular ute is at record levels with sales rising 14.2 per cent to 39,041 vehicles so far this year, substantially outpacing the running rate in the previous record year of 2008.
Corolla is in front by more than 4,300 sales in the race to be Australia's best-selling passenger car with victory giving it the title for a fifth consecutive year.
Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the likelihood of three significant sales landmarks would not alter the company's plans for the rest of the year.
"Toyota's sales so far this year are the strongest since the mining boom in 2008, so it will be business as usual through to December 31 and beyond," Mr Cramb said.
"Our sales have risen on the back of a significant shift in the mindset of our company and our dealers with an absolute commitment to ensuring every Toyota owner is treated as a guest and receives an exemplary ownership experience."
Other 2017 sales highlights for Toyota this year include Camry (20,498 sales, up 9.7%), LandCruiser 70 Series cab-chassis (7,282 sales, up 25.3%), LandCruiser wagon (10,692 sales, up 9.5%), Prado (12,900 sales, up 4.3%) and RAV4 (17,304, up 5.3%). HiAce van and HiAce bus lead their individual segments.
Last month, Toyota achieved its best October since 2013 with 17,836 sales, which were 9.1 per cent ahead of the same month last year.
Both RAV4 and HiLux 4x4 achieved record October sales. It was the sixth time this year HiLux 4x4 has set a monthly record and the fourth time for RAV4.
